Part Two
By Alexandra Nash, Co-Founder and Director of Beehive Care & Training Group Ltd
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a dedicated time to shed light on this complex neurological condition and celebrate the resilience of those living with Parkinson’s. At Beehive Care & Training Group Ltd, our commitment to supporting individuals affected by Parkinson’s runs deep, as does our dedication to raising awareness and fostering understanding within the broader community.
Understanding Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to produce dopamine, a chemical crucial for smooth and coordinated movements. While it primarily manifests in motor symptoms, muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, and issues with balance, the impacts of Parkinson’s extend far beyond physical challenges. Many individuals also experience symptoms such as fatigue, mood changes, memory difficulties, and sleep disturbances, which can affect their overall quality of life.
It is important to recognise that Parkinson’s affects each individual differently, with symptoms and progression varying widely. This underscores the need for person-centred care, tailored to meet the unique needs and preferences of those living with the condition.
Common Co-Occurring Conditions
Parkinson’s does not exist in isolation—it frequently comes with additional health challenges. Many individuals experience co-occurring conditions that can compound the impact of the disease. Some of the most common include:
- Mental Health Conditions: Depression and anxiety often accompany Parkinson’s, influenced by both neurological changes and the emotional toll of living with the condition.
- Sleep Disorders: Insomnia, REM sleep behaviour disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness are common, linked to the brain changes associated with Parkinson’s.
- Cognitive Impairments: Some individuals may face memory issues, concentration difficulties, or even dementia as the disease progresses.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Constipation and other digestive challenges often result from changes in the autonomic nervous system.
- Orthostatic Hypotension: A drop in blood pressure when standing can cause dizziness or fainting.
- Skin Cancer (Melanoma): Research suggests an increased risk of melanoma in those with Parkinson’s, though the reasons are not fully understood.
- Urinary Problems: Issues such as incontinence or urgency can arise due to autonomic dysfunction.
- Musculoskeletal Conditions: Reduced mobility and rigidity can lead to joint pain and stiffness.
Addressing these co-occurring conditions requires a holistic approach to care, considering both the primary symptoms of Parkinson’s and these additional challenges.
Providing Tailored Support
At Beehive Care, we are passionate about empowering our carers with the skills and knowledge needed to provide exceptional support to individuals with Parkinson’s. Through comprehensive training, we ensure that our team understands the complexities of this condition and can confidently address the challenges it presents.
Support often begins with small but significant adjustments—helping to establish structured routines, assisting with mobility, or using adaptive devices that promote independence. It’s equally important to provide emotional support, offering reassurance and understanding to help individuals navigate the psychological and emotional aspects of Parkinson’s.
The Role of Community Awareness
Parkinson’s Awareness Month is not only a time to focus on those directly affected by the condition but also an opportunity to educate the wider community. Simple actions, such as learning about Parkinson’s or showing patience and kindness to individuals who may be struggling, can go a long way in creating a more inclusive and understanding society.
As care providers, we have a unique opportunity to lead by example. By championing awareness initiatives and encouraging open conversations, we can challenge misconceptions and build a supportive network for those living with Parkinson’s.
A Call to Action
At Beehive Care, we are proud to play our part in making a positive difference in the lives of individuals affected by Parkinson’s. Whether it’s through our training programmes, tailored care plans, or advocacy efforts, we remain committed to ensuring that every person receives the support they need to live with dignity and fulfilment.
This Parkinson’s Awareness Month, I invite everyone to take a moment to learn about this condition and reflect on the ways we can all contribute to a more compassionate world. Whether it’s offering a helping hand, volunteering, or simply listening, your actions matter. Together, we can move towards greater understanding and solidarity with those affected by Parkinson’s.
Let’s make this month count.
With warm regards,
Alexandra Nash
