Exploring the Role of Apprenticeships for Individuals and Employers
As we approach National Apprenticeship Week (9–15 February 2026), it’s an ideal moment to explore how apprenticeships support both personal development and organisational growth. Not everyone thrives in traditional academic environments—and that’s okay. Apprenticeships offer an alternative route that values lived experience, practical learning, and the steady development of confidence and capability. They combine paid employment with structured learning, allowing individuals to grow at a pace and in a format that feels grounded and achievable.
- Earn While You Learn
Apprentices are paid employees and do not pay tuition fees for their apprenticeship training. For many, this removes financial barriers while offering a stable environment to learn.
- Skills You’ll Use From Day One
Learning takes place in real working settings, helping individuals develop skills that feel meaningful, relevant and immediately useful.
- Nationally Recognised Qualifications
Apprenticeships lead to formal qualifications that are valued across England, opening pathways into new roles and responsibilities.
- Supportive Career Progression
With structured mentoring and regular check‑ins, apprenticeships create steady, supported steps forward—helping individuals build confidence as well as competence.
- Professional Relationships & Belonging
Working alongside experienced colleagues helps apprentices build networks, find role models and feel a sense of community.
- No Tuition Fees
Training is funded by the employer/government, which means individuals can focus on growth without the pressure of student debt.
- Real, Grounded Experience
Apprentices gain authentic workplace experience—often the element that employers value most highly.
- Flexible Entry Points
Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16+ who is not in full‑time education.
Note: Foundation apprenticeships (from Aug 2025) mainly support ages 16–21, with specific exceptions up to 24.

Understanding Apprenticeship Levels (England)
Level 2 – Intermediate
Equivalent to GCSE‑level learning. Entry requirements vary by employer/training provider.
Level 3 – Advanced
Equivalent to A‑level learning.
Level 4 – Higher
Aligned with a Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) / HNC.
Level 5 – Higher
Aligned with a Foundation Degree / HND.
Level 6 – Degree Apprenticeship
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.
Level 7 – Degree Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships support growth at all stages—early career, mid‑career shifts or leadership development—reflecting the principle that learning isn’t linear and everyone’s path looks different.

2026 Updates to Apprenticeships (England)
From 1 January 2026
- Public funding for new Level 7 apprenticeships (Master’s level) will no longer be available for individuals aged 22+.
- Exceptions: care leavers and those with an EHCP.
- Anyone who starts before this date continues to completion under existing funding.
From April 2026 (Government Announcements)
- Introduction of the Growth & Skills Levy, offering more flexible training options—including modular “apprenticeship units” in areas like digital and AI.
- Levy system changes include:
- Removal of the 10% government top‑up
- Levy funds expiring after 12 months instead of 24
- Increased employer contributions once the levy funds are used
- A continued policy focus on supporting younger entrants, including fully funded apprenticeships for under‑25s at SMEs.
These updates aim to broaden access, modernise training options and ensure funding supports long‑term workforce needs.
